Materials science is an important field of research for Germany, and particularly for the local state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Knowledge, understanding, and development of materials are needed worldwide in all important areas to address the challenges of our time in the fields of energy, transportation, health, and environment.

The Chair for Materials Science and Engineering, together with the research groups Materials Processing and Microstructure and Mechanical Properties, is part of the Institute for Materials at the Ruhr University Bochum. In teaching and research, we deal with the synthesis and processing, structure, and properties of materials. The microstructure of materials is at the core of our activities. We conduct research on structural materials such as superalloys, high-entropy alloys, and refractory metal-based materials. In addition, functional materials, particularly shape memory alloys, are subject of our research. With respect to these materials, we focus on phase transformations and reactions, mechanical and microstructural characterization, and materials modeling. Our research priority is to reveal fundamental mechanisms of microstructure formation and deformation processes, which we investigate with researchers worldwide.

In teaching, we offer fundamental and advanced lectures, exercises, and practical courses that deal with the basics of materials science, materials characterization, and the properties of materials. Our goal is to thoroughly prepare students for the challenges of modern materials research and to enable them to develop innovative solutions for future technological requirements.
