The chair contributes to the materials science teaching activities at Ruhr-Universität Bochum in a strongly materials science focused environment. Our teaching offerings are integrated into various specialization areas and degree programs:
as well as other programs from different faculties, e.g., in natural or geosciences. Despite this diverse integration, our teaching offerings are coherent and comprehensive in conveying the fundamentals of engineering materials. We are supported in this by our colleagues at Ruhr University Bochum and external partners. In addition, our students have access to all our lectures; even when these are not explicitly mentioned in the course plans.
The chair imparts, in addition to fundamental knowledge of all major material groups, the science of materials with its fundamental and integrative, application-oriented aspects in theory and practice. Materials scientists are engineers with a scientific background.
Teaching by the chair takes place in a scientifically oriented climate. This climate is such that students feel engagement with technical, scientific, and social problems. Engineers must be able to assess the consequences of technology and understand that technical innovation can only make a meaningful contribution to solving the problems our society faces today through integration with other societal developments. This type of education does not happen only through lectures but by practical courses, excursions, and exchange of ideas with others and in conversations on the fringes of daily work.
In teaching, we try to address the exponentially growing knowledge not by increasing the amount of lecture material but by intelligently condensing and networking aspects. To this end, fundamental principles must be worked out on a few striking examples that can be transferred to other cases. We strive to impart polyvalent skills to our graduates that do justice to the interdisciplinarity of our field.
