The research group "Elementary Microstructural Processes" uses analytical electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) in combination with microstructure informatics to investigate elementary mechanisms that determine the properties of functional and structural engineering materials. For functional materials, shape memory alloys are the main focus, with particular attention to questions regarding the relationship between martensitic transformation and functional and structural fatigue. In the field of structural materials, Ni-base superalloys are the primary focus. The evolution of microstructure during manufacturing and subsequent high-temperature deformation is studied. Material properties are captured using thermal analysis methods and mechanical methods (creep, fatigue, and fracture mechanics) and are interpreted based on microstructural
