The lecture aims at Master’s students with an interest in materials problems in energy systems. Advances in energy technology are strongly linked to innovations in the materials field. The lecture covers both structural materials and functional materials that are currently used in energy systems or will be of increasing importance in the future.

First, students are introduced to this interesting topic through general aspects of energy demand and consumption. Subsequently, the fundamentals and their application to problem areas in conventional power plants are discussed. Regarding structural materials, the lecture introduces the field of mechanical behavior of materials at high temperatures and discusses some key components of steam power plants and gas turbines as examples. The lecture imparts the materials-related fundamentals for both the new construction of high-temperature components and the residual life analysis of power plant components that are reaching the end of their design life. In addition, materials problems and developments in the field of alternative energy conversion systems are also addressed. For this purpose, the relevant fundamentals for understanding functional properties are explained. The lecture concludes with specific materials aspects in alternative energy conversion systems, including the use of hydrogen, wind energy, and solar technology.
