This course covers key material properties relevant to materials science and general engineering. Starting with the fundamental principles of physics (atomic structure, quantum mechanics), the resulting material properties (e.g., radioactivity, the piezoelectric effect, the Seebeck effect, X-ray spectra, etc.) are systematically presented. This is done against the backdrop of the application of these properties in materials science or engineering (e.g. Mössbauer spectroscopy, load cells, thermocouples, EDX analysis, etc.). In the lecture, students learn about a variety of measurement methods for determining material properties and their underlying principles.
