A part of the lecture module deals with the development of materials science and its relationship to other socially important areas. Materials science has emerged from the natural sciences (mathematics, chemistry, physics) and deals with the materials and material systems of technology. It has established itself as a new engineering science in the second half of the last century. Materials have always played an important role in the history of mankind. They appear in mythology and have significantly shaped social developments. Today, material problems are discussed in terms of material cycles, where resource issues must be considered as well as long-term sustainability. Materials science makes a significant contribution to solving the major challenges of humanity in the areas of energy, transport, health, safety and for various social developments.
In the second part of the lecture module, the fundamentals of chemical thermodynamics and kinetics are applied to materials. High-temperature reactions play a central role for all technically used engineering materials. Firing of clay and the production of the first metallic alloys are historical examples. Nowadays, it is about thermodynamic stabilities and driving forces, as well as atomic material transport and atomic mobilities. The necessary fundamentals are taught in the lecture and explained using examples so that the knowledge acquired can be transferred to other cases. Topics covered include reactions of solids with gases and liquids.
Materials for each lecture are available for download, which also contain references to helpful literature for self-study. The integrated exercises optimally prepare for the exam by dealing with similar questions. As part of the lecture, excursions take place to regional and supra-regional companies where materials engineers work.
