For several years, Pascal Thome has led the research group for microstructure informatics. He is currently in the final phase of his Habilitation project. His research focuses on an interdisciplinary approach that applies artificial intelligence and computer vision to the quantitative characterization of microstructures. A central tool in his work is the high-resolution RVB-EBSD method (Rotation Vector Base Line Electron Back Scatter Diffraction), which he developed to map local orientation fields in single crystal superalloys. Building on this foundation, Thome combines machine learning with purpose-built database structures, including the Relational-Geometric-Ontology (RGO), to model processing-microstructure-property relationships in a data-driven manner. Current projects include the NRW-funded collaborative project Automorph for automated microstructure characterization and an SFB/Transregio 103 transfer project on the dendritic solidification of Ni-base single crystal superalloys. Thome also provides scientific consulting services on digital image analysis for industrial partners in Germany.
