The lecture introduces the basic elements of microstructure as determining factors of materials behavior and properties. Based on fundamental aspects on crystallography and chemical bonds, crystallographic defects are introduced and classified. Along with their characteristics, their impact on microstructure formation, evolution and materials properties are derived based on thermodynamic, kinetic and mechanical basis. The lecture is complemented by a comprehensive application of these fundamental aspects on various materials. Thus, phenomena like phase transformations, elastic and plastic deformation are discussed.
