The lecture series “Fundamental Aspects of Materials Science and Engineering” builds up on basic materials science knowledge and introduces selected, currently researched topics. We discuss why an atomistic and thermodynamic understanding is important in materials science and engineering. Different material classes are considered for this, which are the focus of today’s research: catalytic materials, superalloys, and refractory-element-based materials as well as shape memory alloys. The thermodynamic and kinetic fundamentals are repeated and strengthened. Furthermore, combinatorial materials discovery is introduced. These topics are of general importance in materials science and allow students to apply fundamental knowledge to several material classes.
For each lecture, materials are available for download, which also include references to helpful literature for self-study. The integrated exercises prepare optimally for the exam by addressing similar questions.
