Description

The lab course complements the theoretical lectures by offering hands-on experimental sessions where students explore key concepts in materials science through practical exercises. Students conduct experiments to investigate the mechanical behavior of materials, such as tensile testing to understand elasticity and plasticity, fatigue testing to observe failure under cyclic loading, and corrosion tests to study material degradation. They also learn to use modern characterization techniques, including microscopy and spectroscopy, to analyze microstructures and correlate them with material properties. The experiments are designed to reinforce the theoretical knowledge gained in the lectures, such as phase transformations during solidification and heat treatments, and to develop practical skills in materials testing and analysis. Through these practical sessions, students gain a deeper understanding of how processing routes influence microstructure and, consequently, material properties. The lab course thus bridges the gap between theory and application, preparing students for real-world materials selection and design challenges.
