As part of his doctoral thesis, Tim Storch is investigating microstructural and mechanical properties that contribute to the high-temperature strength of polycrystalline Ni-base superalloys. He is examining the impact of the σ-phase on mechanical properties. To this end, model microstructures exhibiting varying σ-phase contents (up to 6 %) are prepared while maintaining a constant γ/γ′-microstructure. Creep tests, high-temperature tensile tests, and fatigue tests are then conducted on these microstructural states. Additionally, Tim is working on a project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) that addresses the thermodynamic, kinetic, and microstructural aspects of σ-phase formation in Ni-base superalloys.
