Sakia Noorzayee is a doctoral student at our department as part of the International Max Planck Research School on Sustainable Metallurgy (IMPRS SusMet). Her research focuses on the processing and recycling of NiTi shape memory alloys (SMAs). Her work primarily examines the reactions that occur during melting and solidification. Particular attention is given to trace elements that can accumulate during recycling processes and thus influence the functional properties of a SMA component. For example, carbon and oxygen can deplete Ti from a NiTi alloy, leading to a decrease in the martensite start temperature Ms. Furthermore, the research examines which microstructural changes occur during the remelting and subsequent heat treatment of a NiTi component and how these changes affect its functional properties. In addition, small oxide and carbide inclusions are being investigated in collaboration with the MPI in Düsseldorf using atomic probe tomography.
