Nico Paufler studies the effects of trace elements on the high-temperature properties of single-crystal Ni-base superalloys. As a member of our group, Nico Paufler is also involved in the International Max Planck Research School on Sustainable Metallurgy (IMPRS SusMet), addressing the topic of recycling single crystal Ni-base superalloys. Nico works in the processing group of Jan Frenzel and collaborates with R&D scientists from MTU Aeroengines Munich. The focus of the investigations is on sustainable metallurgy and cross-scale sample characterization. The recycling of Ni-base superalloys can introduce undesirable trace elements into the alloy. The aim of the work is to take a step towards sustainable single crystal technology. It aims to demonstrate how the incorporation of trace elements affects solidification processes, the development of microstructure during heat treatment, and the critical material properties.
