What parameters influence the morphology of harmful intermetallic phases that form during operation at high temperatures?
As part of his doctoral thesis, Mathias Redondo Garcia is working with his advisor, Prof. Dr. Guillaume Laplanche, on a project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The goal of this project is to gain a better understanding of the various parameters that influence the morphology of σ-phase precipitates in structural materials. The σ-phase is one of the most common intermetallic phases in engineering alloys. σ-phase precipitation is known to be detrimental, as it leads to embrittlement and impairs creep resistance, fatigue properties, and corrosion resistance. Therefore, it is important to predict how this phase forms and how its precipitation and the morphology of the precipitates influence material properties.
In this context, Mathias Redondo Garcia is investigating the kinetics of σ-phase precipitation in two model alloys with very different precipitation morphologies (i.e., globular and plate-like). Mathias also conduct tensile tests on precisely defined microstructures to determine how these morphologies affect tensile behavior and lead to embrittlement. This project is being carried out in collaboration with the group led by Prof. Markus Stricker at the Interdisciplinary Center for Advanced Materials Simulation (ICAMS), where machine learning methods are used to automatically and quantitatively analyze the microscopic images obtained by Mathias and to compare his experimental results with simulations of the precipitation process.
