Research

Marcel Münch is a doctoral candidate investigating modern advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) in cooperation with Prof. Tsuji’s group at Kyoto University, with a particular focus on eutectoid and near-eutectoid Fe-Mn-C alloys. His work focuses on a refined target microstructure consisting of martensite and metastable austenite, which develops from an initially pearlitic state. Due to the different solubility of Mn in ferrite and cementite, a lamellar Mn concentration profile forms, which is largely retained even after complete austenitization. This chemical inhomogeneity leads to local variations in martensite start temperature, enabling the formation of martensitic-austenitic microstructures with pearlite-like morphology after quenching.
